THE POWER OF PRAISE

Have you ever had a dance party when you’re feeling blue? Or cranked up the praise and worship to sing along? It changes you from the inside out, lifting your spirits even when circumstances haven’t changed. David, the author of many of the Psalms knew that music and worship had a profound impact on the soul. The Psalms are the beauty of truth, poetry, and music combined.

While our circumstances may not change any time soon, we can change our heart posture in an instant. Last year, our friend Aiva shared with us how she learned to pray by singing to God. It got her through some extremely difficult times and allowed her light to shine within and onto others. We believe her story and modern-day psalm she sings at the end will lift your spirits! And who doesn’t need that right now?

Listen to Aiva’s story and then consider the following questions:

(If you’re doing the study with littles, consider starting Aiva’s story at minute 17 on the player.)

How do we know God is present?

Where do we see this promise in scripture?

Have you felt God’s presence in your life?

Is there a verse you can cling to or a song you can sing to be reminded of His nearness?

How can you encourage others when they are struggling?

Scripture to consider: Genesis 28:15, John 14:27, Exodus 33:14, Joshua 1:9, Psalm 23:4, Matthew 28:19-20, John 14:16

Questions to get the family talking.

What do you do when you are sad or scared?

How do we know that God is always with us?

Have you ever had “fuzzy faith” like Aiva when you can’t feel God?

Can you think of a bible story where God speaks to someone and encourages them?

Do you have a friend or family member that you would like to pray for and encourage?

Activity: Write a Poem– Did you know that Psalms are like poems sung to God and about God? Can you write a simple poem about God’s goodness? {tip: not all poems rhyme!}
