An Order to Prophecy

(Please listen to Pierce’s story by clicking the white play button at the top of this post. You can read the transcript of the story below.)

I am not what I would consider someone that is a prophet or acts in the prophetic on like a regular basis. I’d say I’m mildly aware of when the Holy Spirit wants to do something, or when I hear His voice, and I try to be mindful of that, I try to practice that, and grow in it.

But this experience was one that was utterly bizarre and, and it was key for me in developing a fear of God, like a healthy fear of God as, you know, the Bible talks about.

So the story starts, I was actually visiting a church, and I’m not in full time ministry. Nor am I working vocationally in ministry, I’m not doing any kind of street ministry. I don’t think I’m even like shaking hands at a church, like I’m not involved in ministry in any way other than my own life.

I’m at this church, I’m in the middle of a worship service. And in that worship service, they asked us to start praying for people. And my brother is there. And, I don’t see my brother very often, at this point in life, and I’d gotten just the hint of a hint of a hint that he might need prayer. So I went up to go pray for him. And as I was praying for him, there was a shift, and it wasn’t towards my brother. Actually, it was towards the church as a whole.

And so as I was talking just a minute ago about humility, wherein we steward one thing under the grace that God gives us, right, we come underneath that and from that develops a fear of the Lord. I think we steward that and for me, everything in my life, the Lord has shown me as it comes to developing a fear of the Lord, as it comes to kind of coming under the giftings, either the New Testament giftings, it comes from a place of one, Do I recognize–do I have a fear of the Lord and then two, Am I stewarding that fear in context of the opportunity that he’s giving me?. And when I do those things, that’s when power comes for different things.

So I was praying for my brother. And I get an impression that I’m supposed to talk to the entire church. And I am, again, I’m not a member of the church. No one barely at that church knows me. My brother even isn’t sitting next to me. Right? And I’m just there for a Sunday morning, right? I’m just easy ast Sunday morning. And I just I chose to pray for somebody.

I’ve grown up in some charismatic circles, where I have to be honest, and say, that can’t be the Holy Spirit. It just can’t be. Mainly because you’re not walking out of something in the fear of the Lord. And then two, because you’re not stewarding something well in the context of the people that he’s given authority to, right. So if you know, the pastor and the worship pastor are doing something and you’re causing disorder to that, well then that’s not God. So anyway, I got this inclination. Okay, I’ve, you’ve stewarded something you prayed for your brother, thank you for doing that. Now, there’s something else I want you to do.

And so I went through and mentally traversed the word like, three, four, or five times because, again, I wasn’t used to the experience. And I was like, okay, I need to tell the people this, and I need to tell them this, in this order. And I went through this mental checklist of like, okay, go through this, go through this, go through this, go through this. Then I prayed through it a few times. And I’m like, okay, that’s all really interesting. And then I told the Lord, I told the Lord, what was in the Bible. I go, “God, the Bible says that You don’t cause division in the church, and that You don’t cause confusion and it even says that there’s a certain order for things.” And I said, “and You also said that the spirit of prophets is subject to prophets.” And I said, “so I’m not going to do anything with this, even if it feels like you, because I know what your Scripture says. I’m going to assume that you’re a spirit, I’m going to discern the spirit. And, and so I cross my arms. And then I said, “but, but if this is You, You can go get an elder and get him to come talk to me. And we’ll create a space for it in the service.” And I said, “that’s the only way I’m going to do this, because You don’t cause confusion.” As soon, and when I say, “as soon,” I mean, like, as soon as I finished that prayer, this elder stands up. He’s on the opposite side of the church. He walks across the front of the church in between, like, the space between where the chairs are, and where the podium is, and everything, walks all the way across. And it’s got to look weird to everybody that’s watching him.

As the worship band is going, he comes around my aisle, comes up to me, sits down and leans over. And he goes, “The Lord told me that we’re supposed to talk.” And he’s like, “did you need prayer for something? Or is there something else we were supposed to talk about?” And, again, when I talked about something developing the fear of the Lord in you, this developed the fear of the Lord in me, you know, there’s hundreds of people, probably between me and him. And for him to just stand up and walk all the way across. It was a very powerful thing witness.

And, you know, it wasn’t like he was kind of like searching for me, either. He was all the way on the aisle. He moves up to me, sits down the on seat next to me and leans over. And there’s something really powerful in that.

So anyway, so I say, “yes.” And I said, “I feel like the Lord gave me a word for the entire church.” I tell him the word and he goes,”No way.” He said, “Before the church service started up the entire elder board always prays.” And he said, “and when the elder board was praying, this word is exactly what was on all of our hearts. But we didn’t feel room to give it.” He said, “I think you’re supposed to get it. Let me go back and talk to all the elders about it. And then I’ll decide whether you should talk or not.” Again, because no one knows me, I don’t know the elder board. So he goes back, talks to- I don’t think they like hold a meeting in the middle of the service. But he talks to two or three, comes back and said, “Yeah, we’re going to create space for you to talk about this.” So then they send someone up to the worship team and they pause the worship. They said, “Hey, this is Pierce. Pierce wants to come and give this word.”

But this experience was one that was utterly bizarre and, and it was key for me in developing a fear of God, like a healthy fear of God as, you know, the Bible talks about.

So you know, I’m shaking in my boots kind of thing. You know, again, I’m an introvert. I’m not great with the words. And, and so they give me room to speak. And I speak and I feel the Holy Spirit come on me. And again, if you haven’t experienced that before, it’s not necessarily an emotion. It’s not a prompting. It’s not anything. It’s a weight that enables you to do something. I always call it like an animation. I think the Holy Spirit animates you, which when you talk about the spirit of prophets being subject to prophets, this is something that’s incredible, I think. So God gives you a gift, right? And then He says, I’m going to empower you with that gift. You’re like a water hose, right? And the pressure of that power is coming through you. But you’re just the vehicle for it. And you’re being animated by it, but you are not the gift. God is giving you control of the gift, which tells you why, I think, some people operate more in the giftings than others, because they’ve learned how to steward something well.

There’s some people that have the gifts of the Spirit that don’t walk in the fear of the Lord, and they don’t steward something well, and so it’s kind of like a sprinkler head is sprinkling all around and getting water all over everything. And as you steward things, you become more like a water hose. And you begin to focus things and, and God gives us that permission. Because He wants everything to get watered–watered one way or the other.

So anyway, I get the opportunity to give the word, and I saw a shift in the room and on people’s faces when I gave it. And it was a pretty incredible experience.

To back up, let me tell you about the word that I gave my brother. So my brother, again, is sitting in a row in front of me. Because he’s acting like a loner on purpose. He’s sitting by himself because he wants to sit by himself. I get the impression that the Lord loves him and that the Lord wants to bring him into what He’s doing there. And so I go up there, and I just put my arm around him and say, “Hey, do you mind if I pray for you? The Lord wants you to know, He loves you, and you can be a part of this too.” And it was just a simple act of obedience. And then the second that happened, I got an expanded version of that, which was the word the church. And it was about how you don’t–this is the funny thing. This tells you the humility of the elder–it was about how you don’t need to be an elder, and how you don’t need to be an ordained leader in the church to be a minister in the gifts. Which was something I think the church, at the time, was doing something about. What they wanted to do is demonstrate, I think, how the Holy Spirit works, something like that. That’s what the sermon was on.

And so what happened, if you can kind of see it linearly is– the Lord gave me an impression for my brother. I pray for my brother. The Lord says, “Okay, good. You’ve stewarded that opportunity to love somebody and to talk to them about that one thing. Great. Now, what I want you to do is tell the whole church and I want you to expand upon it.” There was almost a compounded miracle in this if you think about it. So at the end, when I gave the word, I had the opportunity to say, “Okay, so what I’m telling you is true. All of you can act in the gifts. And this is how.”

At the end of it, though, was the power of it because I got to say, “Hey, listen, I didn’t talk to Don,” that was the elder’s name, “before this. I had no plan of talking about this. The Holy Spirit talked to Don and told him to come talk to me, because Holy Spirit talked to me first.” So they got to witness how the Lord administers His own church in His own body, which is a miracle in and of itself, and then get the benefit of the word.

So it was playing out in real time. Which, to me, is the more powerful of the two, at least in my mind, that none of this was talked about ahead of time. And so I shared that bit, so that people kind of understood what was happening, and the grace that was on it. Now I feel like I have a greater awareness of how the Lord works. The Lord is able to order His own body and do things that are bizarrely miraculous, at the same time. He’s fully capable of it.

And I think sometimes we think that the Holy Spirit is the absence of structure. He’s not, He’s the absence of dead works. And I think sometimes He will blow out order in order to create an opportunity to do something new.

But He is not going to tear down His own house in the process. He is going to build it up. So that might mean He takes out a few bricks and puts in a couple more, but He’s always in the process of going from glory to glory of creating new things. And so that’s what I learned that day.
